Bishnupur, a city of temple, where the Sub-Divisional Headquarter is located, was once ancient capital of Malla Raj.The name is derived from 'Vishnu', the majority of people belonging to the 'Vaishnava' sect.Bishnupur Sub-Division was constituted in 1927. The head quarter of Bishnupur Sub-Division is roughly 210 km away from State capital. It is connected with State capital by railway. Bishnupur Sub-Division is lying between 22054 and 23025N and between 87015 and 87046E extending over
1870.05 Sq. Km.
Bishnupur Sub-Division consists of six C.D blocks, two Municipalities and 56 Gram Panchayats sprawling over areas of 709 numbers of mouzas including two urban mouzas. The total population of Bishnupur Sub-Division is 9.96 lac. Bishnupur Sub-Division shares 31.20 percent of total population of Bankura district in 27.17 percent of its area. IAbout 8.96 percent of the total population in Bishnupur Sub-Division is living in urban areas. 37.43 percent of total population belongs to Scheduled castes and 3.29 percent of total population is Scheduled tribe. The literacy percentage in Bishnupur Sub-Division is 62.30 percent. Among male it is 73.60 percent and among female it is only 50.40 percent.

via Burdwan, Khandaghosh or Kolkata to Bishnupur via Durgapur,
Bankura.
